Two cranes rise through an indigo sky, carrying the viewer toward a glowing celestial form. Created from a hand-dyed Nui Shibori panel, intricate quilting and original crane design thread work. This original textile artwork explores light, movement, and the quiet beauty of open space.
Artist’s Statement
This artwork began with a length of hand-dyed Nui Shibori fabric. Rather than treating the dyed cloth as the finished work, I saw it as the beginning of a landscape.
The organic patterns created through stitching and dyeing suggested a vast sky, while the textured lower edge became a distant horizon. Into this landscape I introduced my own original crane designs, to create movement and rhythm.
The circular celestial form represents a source of light—open to interpretation as the rising sun or the moon—allowing each viewer to bring their own meaning to the journey of the cranes.
My work combines the centuries-old Japanese technique of Nui Shibori with contemporary quilt making and original design.
